At this point I realised with a pang of regret that my exploration of this vibrant city had been surprisingly limited. Sure, I frequented the usual haunts, but when it came to recommending hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path adventures, I found myself drawing a blank.

Determined to discover more of what Maastricht had to offer, I turned to the internet for inspiration. First I contacted a friend. Together we agreed to venture into this new experience. So I quickly bought a game through the website. Within minutes an email popped into my inbox. In this email we found everything we needed to embark on this escapade: the starting location, a play link, and a handful of helpful tips. This really ensured us that we were going to be able to make the most of our experience.

Excitedly, we awaited the next day, eager to dive into the unknown. As the sun rose, we found ourselves standing at the designated starting point. With a quick tap on the “Let’s Play” button, our adventure officially commenced.

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.24.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_blurb admin_label=”Started” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

We started to discover Maastricht in the middle of the centre. Although it was quite busy with people, the first riddle popping up on the phone told us to follow the gaze of a man chiselled in stone and cross under a gate. In fact we where then quickly guided away from the crowds. Upon arriving at the correct location, the question had us searching for a statue. We had to take a closer look around the area in order to find out its name. After filling out the correct answer we unlocked an interesting story about the statue and its origin. In the meant time first step of discovering Maastricht with this city game was made!

I don’t want to spoil any riddles for you because discovering the answer yourself is priceless. But just to give you an idea, we looked at things we had never noticed before. On one hand the riddles are diverse, with varying difficulty levels. On the other hand, as long as you keep your eyes open and your wits about you, you should be able to find the correct answer.

At some point in the experience, we were suggested to take a break. Since we liked lo eat something, we accepted the suggestion of the local creators. They wrote in the city game to go a most charming cafe we had not heard about before. Here we each enjoyed one of the daily specials. Café Forum is a great place to eat some lunch, or even to unwind with a cup of coffee or tea. Just so you are aware, the experience is pretty flexible and you can take a break whenever you feel like it

Going for this walk made us feel super excited, stumbling upon quite a few hidden gems while exploring new places. Even though we were in our own city, it felt like an adventure. We checked out all sorts of neat sculptures and secret alleys. Every story we read made us feel more connected to our own neighbourhood, uncovering all its mysteries and cool stuff as we went along.

Concluding our adventure, we found ourselves on a charming square in the heart of Maastricht. To mark our achievement, we opted to toast with a revitalizing drink at one of the numerous terraces in the area. Using this city game to discover more about Maastricht was really fun!

Primrose Hill is located north of Regent’s Park and it has a character of its own. It used to be a place where duels were fought and prize fights took place. These days it offers a great view of London’s skyline and makes for the perfect spot to have a drink and relax looking down the hill.

We know that you love the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam’s atmosphere. But we also know that sometimes it’s good to take a break from it! Our suggestion: Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest). Three times the size of New York’s Central Park and with loads of fun activities for the whole family, you will not regret your visit! During spring and summertime, you can even go swimming or kayaking. You might also discover a goat farm, the best pancake restaurant… And much more!

Do you wonder where fairytales take their inspiration from? Us too! And to our eyes, these gardens look like taken straight from a magical story! Located on a hilltop in Porto, where you can enjoy a dreamy panoramic view of the city and the Douro River. If you need a break from all the wandering we could not recommend enough a visit to Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett.

“Where do I go if I want to have a relaxed spring/summer afternoon? And where can I get the best view of Prague?” you may wonder. Well, you can do both in Petřín Hill. It is also in a very convenient place: close to the river, Prague Castle and wonderful restaurants and cafes. If you don’t feel like going up the hills you can use the funicular – which is also an amazing experience! Ah, make sure you go up the Petřín Tower, which is 63.5 meters high and with hard-to-beat panoramic views! Go on our Prague Discovery Walk and find all the hidden secrets and spots the city has to offer!

Riga is so rich in green spaces that we couldn’t choose only one! Go for Esplanade Park, a park-square near other famous Riga sights, to hang out or to take a little break from all the walking. For more of a natural feeling, we recommend Kronvalda Park, the oldest park in Riga. This park is home to amazing flora and you won’t regret spending time admiring all the majestic trees. If you enjoy parks with more of a social side, in Vērmanes Dārzs, during the warmer months, local bands perform at the outdoor amphitheatre, some handicraft stalls from locals are open and the grass – literally – gets greener! If you wish to discover the hidden gems of these parks our Riga Discovery Walk will be the best companion!

Hi Filipa! We can’t wait to see what you’ll be up to on your incredible journey this autumn. Before we dive into travel related questions, let’s do a short intro for our followers, shall we?

Hey! I’m Filipa, I’m a ‘90s child who’s always up for a new adventure; so if you’re looking for a road trip partner, I’m probably already by your side with my seatbelt on! I’m a super friendly, bubbly girl and also a creative mind; I love to express myself through photography, acting and writing. I live in a small village near Setúbal, a seaside city an hour from Lisbon but I’ve spent a lot of time in Lisbon for the last few years as I worked and studied there. I graduated in Social and Organisational Psychology and studied Anthropology, so you can say I’m passionate about discovering and understanding people and cultures.

Some months ago, after spending one year working in a big company, wanderlust gripped me and I quit my job to start traveling. I felt like I couldn’t deny myself any longer the desire to know more about the world, you know? I started to share a bit of my travels and daily life on my Instagram page and found myself increasingly passionate about travel and lifestyle content creation. When I saw that Secret City Trails was looking for a travel content creator I thought this opportunity was made for me! By then I was already following Secret City Trails and was very interested in its “by travellers for travellers” concept. While exploring a new city, I always try to do that “as a local”, by hunting for its lesser known but worth visiting places, as I believe it takes your travel experience to another level. I had that strange feeling that something good was about to change my life, even before applying.

What are the necessary elements for a great city trip for you?

When I arrive in a new place, I don’t really have a specific “to-do” list or high expectations; I have a rough idea of the things and places I would like to see and visit but I like to let the travel flow surprise me. So then, a 20 minute walk between two points may turn into a full-on three-hour excursion, if I get sidetracked seeing “other” things that I discover on the way! And, believe me, sometimes it could end up being the best part of the trip. In short, for me, it’s useful to have a flexible travel plan before you go. I also like to search for some photo location inspiration and helpful local travel tips before arriving at the destination.

How do you hunt for secrets in new cities you are visiting?

In this case, I totally recommend talking to strangers! I challenge you to try this: as soon as you arrive at your destination, turn to a side street and look for some old local coffee shops or a grocery shop. You’ll probably find someone nice who recommends you a place that is not in the tourist guides, where you can try the best local cuisine, for example. Also, I advise you to stay in a central hostel. I often travel low cost, so I’ve been to some hostels and I found them a great place for getting to know new people and to share ideas on how to discover some of the city secret spots and hidden gems. If you’re lucky enough, you can even find a travel partner there.

You’ll get to visit quite a few beautiful and vibrant cities soon. Are there any places you’re particularly looking forward to explore?

Do I really have to choose? Besides Vienna, I will be visiting all those cities for the first time. Amsterdam has been on my list forever and I was planning for it to be one of my next destinations, so I’m particularly excited about this one. I can see myself there already, exploring every inch of the canals, and its countless bridges, historic churches and cute houseboats. Do you know that you can go plastic fishing on the Amsterdam canals? I think this environmentally friendly initiative may be one of the most unusual things to do in Amsterdam and a different way to explore the canals. I would love to try it out.

Can you look in your camera roll and find a photo of something that caught your attention in a city?

Here you can see the Postlingberg tram in Liniz. You may not believe me, but my 20 minute ride from the centre of the city to the top of Linz’s local mountain in this old tram ride was one of the highlights of my trip to Austria, as me and my friend reached the top just in time for sunset! The view was mesmerizing and I almost cried for joy. Postlingbergbahn is the steepest adhesion railway in Europe, so it’s an experience you can’t miss!

Since you know the city so well, what are your top 3 unusual things to see and do in Lisbon?

Listen to stray fado (fado “vadio”) in Clube do Fado Amigos do Fado – CLAF
I believe this fado house in Chelas is the oldest fado house in Lisbon; it is also a fado school. It has a small restaurant inside, so you can go there for trying the typical caldo verde or other typical Portuguese dishes, while listening to fado music. Actually, my first live fado experience happened there. On Sundays, they have fado matinée starting around 16:00, where you can see some young singers taking first steps in their career.

Have a drink in Rio Maravilha in Alcântara
This rooftop has an unparalleled view of the bridge and river and it’s situated in one of the coolest areas of Lisbon, LX Factory, which is also a must see. It’s known by being the city’s “creative corner” as it shows how portuguese modern urban art has been evolving.

Explore Free Water Aqueduct (Aqueduto das Águas Livres)
Built in the XVIII century, this is a giant stone aqueduct that crosses Lisbon and had provided generations of locals with water. It offers one of the most unusual views of Lisbon.

One last question: do you have any inspirational motto that you keep in mind when you travel and explore new cities?

Yes, expect less, be more open to every possibility. I’m an open minded and flexible person, and I think that’s a plus for having a great travel experience 😊

There I was on my city break in Lisbon, joined by a couple of friends living here, about to start playing a ‘city discovery game’ by Secret City Trails and wondering what am I getting myself into. My sister, who recommended the game to me, had said it’s like a treasure hunt – something we loved playing as kids – combining riddles and sightseeing. At this stage I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but it sounded like fun and I didn’t want to drag my friends to the landmarks they had visited with other guests again and again.

There were small huddles of tourists admiring the view of the Tagus River, but the first riddle – following 18 flowers that always blossom – guided us to a quiet street away from the crowds. The first riddle had us searching for murals, we had to take a closer look to count birds, ships and other details we might have otherwise missed. It took us two attempts, but we solved the puzzle and unlocked a story about Lisbon’s famous decorated tiles, azulejos. I don’t want to spoil any riddles, because the satisfaction of finding the correct answer is priceless!

Just to give you an idea, we followed a sculpture’s gaze, looked angels in the eyes and found messages hidden in beautiful street art pieces. The riddles were diverse, with varying difficulty levels. By the way, if you can solve the riddle near a shop with traditional Portuguese conserves in three guesses or less, then your detective skills are impressive! It took us many tries and we even had to use a hint, but once we found the correct answer it seemed so obvious we couldn’t stop laughing.

The game brought out our adventure skills from the very beginning. Every quirky sculpture and every hidden side alley sparked our curiosity, whether it was part of the game or not. Each story we unlocked along the way allowed us to get to know, and connect with, the neighbourhood.

We finished the treasure hunt in the garden of Botto Machada, sipping freshly made iced tea in the sun. So which trail would we like to try next? The one that features a labyrinthic cemetery, or the trail of Lisbon’s best local food specialities, or perhaps the one that takes players around the city’s most amazing rooftops? Choosing between them was just another puzzle to crack that day – and as we’d found out from the game creators, we had riddle ninja skills.
